THE Olympic action may have only just got under way in Beijing but one Motherwell teenager has already set his sights on making an impact in the next Games.

Boxer Iain Butcher has been picked for the British boxing development squad which is building up for the 2012 Games in London.

The 16-year-old Jerviston ABC fighter's selection was some consolation for his disappointment at the recent British junior championships in Cardiff when he was narrowly beaten on points by home boxer Chris Ellery in the final of the 44kg weight class.

Iain is part of a second string squad under the development system and will travel down to Sheffield on a regular basis for training sessions where his progress will be closely monitored by selectors.

As he continues to improve he will hopefully get the chance to step up to the top development squad of fighters who represent Britain in international competitions.

Club coach Jack Parvin said: "Iain deserved to win gold in Cardiff but to be selected for the development squad is a great achievement.

"It's also an excellent opportunity for him to progress to London 2012."
